Tennis was one of the original Olympic sports in Athens 1896, and it continued as part of the Games until Paris 1924. It was then removed from Olympic competition due to disputes between the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over allowing professional players to compete. In 1988 tennis was reinstated and has been part of the Olympic program ever since. Between 1896 and 1924, thirty-two events were contested, with GBR winning 15 gold medals, USA 7, FRA 5, RSA 3, GER 1 and a mixed team GBR/GER 1.
